2010 ENERGY STAR® Leadership in Housing Award Honors Energy Savings of Craftmark Homes.

McLean, Virginia – Craftmark Homes, one of the top 50 privately held businesses in the nation’s capital region, has been honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with a 2010 ENERGY STAR® Leadership in Housing Award. This award recognizes the significant contribution that Craftmark Homes has made to energy efficient construction and environmental protection by building ENERGY STAR® qualified homes. The homes built by Craftmark are rated over 12% above the ENERGY STAR® standard on average. This is based upon a 75.3 HERS rating. One of Craftmarks recent homebuyers stated, “The ENERGY STAR® Certification was worth every penny! Our 4,600 square foot house has not had an energy bill over $233.00, even during the big D.C. blizzard of 2010.”

To earn the ENERGY STAR®, a home must meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and include additional energy saving features that typically make them “20% – 30% more efficient than standard homes”.

In the words of Ken Malm, President of the Craftmark Group, “We invite potential homeowners to discover for themselves how our evolving standards can provide them with significant monthly savings in these times of rising fuel costs, as well as the opportunity to help protect the environment through energy efficiency. It is inspiring that ENERGY STAR® qualified homes will save more than $270 million on utility bills this year alone, while avoiding greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 370,000 vehicles.”

He continued, “ENERGY STAR® qualified homes offer homebuyers all the energy saving features they want in a new home, including effective insulation systems, high performance windows and doors, tight construction and ducts, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, energy-saving appliances and 3rd party verification of energy performance.”

In conclusion he said, “We have a brochure available that details specifically what we include with every home as an ENERGY STAR® Partner, and that looks behind the walls to demonstrate the full details of our Green Building throughout every home. No one should purchase a new home without using this important resource as a basis for comparison.”
